I have my AppleTV connected to the television via HDMI and also connected to an amplifier via optical audio. I would like to disable the HDMI audio output as to not have the sound play through the television, but it does not appear to be configurable in the AppleTV menu. Is this possible?

No that's not possible. Most modern TV's have options to turn off the TV speakers, but if your TV doesn't have such an option, you can always turn the TV volume down. If you are using an amplifier all your audio should go through that amplifier and it isn't necessary to have your TV speakers turned on for anything at all.
Well I'm running update v.4.2.2 I don't have a solid internet connection to update the blasted thing. I have my optical audio plugged in and I'm getting signal lights through the cable but when its plugged into my reciever no sound comes out of my reciever, only the HDMI connection into the TV. I would like to fix it without haveing to jailbreak it and put xbmc on it.
When ever I Google the issue all I see is that optical out is not functioning. So why put a half crack assed thing on it?
Can you select or disable AppleTV's audio output?
