Can you not gift apps with credit?

Is it not possible to gift apps to your friends with credit on your account? My account does not have a credit card attached, but I buy iTunes cards to place credit on my account. For some reason, it will not allow me to gift my friend an app with the credit on the account and keeps asking me for a credit card.

Sorry for the thread necro, but I just ran into this same problem, and I'm shocked that there isn't a way to gift apps with store credit. This seems like a feature that should absolutely be included in the app store. Is there some justification given by Apple as to why they don't allow this?

I received a gift card from my employer several years ago, but I still have a balance in my account from that card. I now have a wife (whom I didn't know at the time I received the card and applied it to my own account). I want to gift her an app from my own balance. It doesn't seem logical that although I still have enough money in my own account to buy this app for her, I have to buy her a separate gift card and apply it to her account...or just simply buy the app directly on her account.

This is the Mac App Store. Apps for Macs. There is no gifting facility in the Mac App Store, regardless of how you want to pay for an app; gift credit, credit or debit card, you can't do it.

If you're talking about iOS apps from the iTunes App Store, that's another forum.
