Can i zoom using the video camera on iPhone 4S?
if so, HOW? I cannot find any tutorials or info about this.
pinch out on the screen in the camera app an that should zoom in

Zoom is only support in Camera mode.
But also if you just take the video you cam zoom in and it will still be a good quality. it has a great camera just zoom in afterwards

Is this really true?? I am so disappointed. I could not find any reference to it one way or the other. Is it actually written in the iphone user guide that you can't zoom in video mode? I missed that, if so.

I have not yet used imovie. So are you saying that if I put the video from my phone into imovie app, I can zoom in there, and then can I save that zoom, so if I play it again, it will show the zoomed in image from before?
Check in the Apps Store, maybe there is one that supports your cause.

Also, I have seen an app for sale from Mirage called videozoom (or something) that claims you can zoom in with video on iphone by using this app....but how can you use an app for an app?
