I am living abroad in the UK and have been using my iPhone 4 on airplane mode with wi-fi. Is it possible to still use imessage this way? I had it set up when i was back in the US and it worked fine, but as soon as i came back here i am not able to. Thanks in advance!

iMessage cannot be used in airoplane mode
iMessage should work with WiFi turned on, and your phone in Airplane mode. When you try to iMessage, are you getting an error message like "You must disable Airplane mode to send/receive messages"? If so, hit cancel & iMessage should still work.
That's not true.
iMessage requires an internet connection only, so if you have wi-fi access enabled after turning on Airplane mode it can work.
Thank you all, I was able to get it to work! Turns out the contacts i thought were using imessage had turned it off!

Good question!! Now that I have been in the basement at work and don't get an AT&T signal down here, I have to use iMessage on wifi....Every time I go into the Messaging app in airplane mode down here, I get that annoying popup....have to hit cancel every time to get it to go away... Seems iOS would know it's in airplane mode and using iMessage....but perhaps it doesn't know to which contact(iOS 5+) I am going to message....Sounds like a good "enhancement" request to Apple...
Tell me about it. I spend a week at a time in Hong Kong in Airplane mode and have to cancel the incorrect and annoying message 50 times a day. Apple should be better than this. I need to submit this change to Apple but don't really know how.
