Is iPad a good stand alone product?

My computer needs have decreased over the years. I no longer keep large files and documents on my computer. Is an iPad a good product to use just by itself for most things, or do you need a computer to go along with it? I mainly keep some family emails, pictures, songs and favorite websites now, and I do keep them backed up to the cloud. Do you need a computer to sync an iPad and keep the operating system updated and to back up things to the cloud, or can you do all that with the iPad by itself?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Beginning with iOS 5, you can get by without a computer using iCloud for syncing over the air and for backup purposes. You can also activate an iPhone or iPad without a computer and download iOS updates.

I have two Airport Expresses(so I have a wireless network) in my home. So I could continue to stream music wirelessly to my stereo and iPad content to my tv using the iPad, right? How do you sync and get IOS updates without a computer?
