Zooming on the iPhone 4s camera

I managed to zoom in yesterday by pinching the screen but now it won't let me zoom again. I've tried pinching it for about 100 years and i press and held the home and sleep/poweroff buttons until the apple sign came up, it still didn't do anything. Any ideas anyone?
