I have an iPhone 4 and it was locked to O2. I recently contacted them to say I want it unlocked in order to use my Vodafone simcard and they simply sent me a text and I unlocked the phone through iTunes. I have now inserted my Vodafone microsim (brand new and working, it does on my other phones) and it says No Service no matter what I do! 😟

I tried that and selected Vodafone UK and it gave an error message saying, "Your selected cellular network is restricted. You can choose a different network in Settings."
I'm pretty sure I unlocked it because on the iTunes screen it said "Your iPhone has been successfuly unlocked" earlier. :S
Reset network settings and then insert your sim card

Try to restore!!!!
How do you "reset" network settings?
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Call 202 from your O2 mobile, select option 1 then option 0 and tell the representative you want to unlock your phone and they'll guide you through the process. 🙂

I looked at the Apple article, but my iTunes didn't say that the unlock was unsuccessful. It said,
"Unlock Complete. Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked. To set up and sync this iPhone, click Continue."

That message is correct and as you would expect to receive at least in UK
The iPhone is now listed as unlocked on Apple database
iPhone is unrestricted for approved carrier use
I just tried an Orange sim and it works with the unlocked phone, it turns out that my microsim is cut wrong! Thank you all for the help.
strange? you stated that your voda microsim was "brand new" and yet now your saying it is cut wrong?
So it was not a microsim but a chopped sim
