iPhone 4 Black Screen But Phone Works

I have used the iPhone 4 (Factory Unlocked) for more than a year now with only minor issues. Like on a usual day I was playing a word game "Rumble" then quit the game, connected my earphones for music & pressed the "Home" button on the phone to unlock it and the screen was Black. This was a sudden shocker!! 😮. I just put the phone to rest for a while & after about an hour crossed my fingers and tried the Home button again but the Black screen continued. So the backlight of the iPhone works I can say that bcoz I see the phone luminates but the "Slide to Unlock" is cannot be seen. Since I have been using the phone for a while I know the exact position of "Slide to Unlock" so if I slide my finger it unlocks too with the default "unlocking (click) noise" but again the icons of the apps cannot be seen, all I see is a fadely luminated grid. I receive SMS's and Calls although I cant read them nor can I see whos calling. Since the screen is blank I cant operate the phone but the phone seems to be working. I hence tried the reboot, restart, shutdown & start again, restore backup, update iOS everything a desperate user would do but nothing has worked till now. There is not much discussion on this issue anywhere hence No resolution. I am gonna visit an Apple service center today and keep my fingers crossed. I have taken utmost care of the phone. Till date it is scratchless, spotless. I miss my phone 😟.

Thank you. That seems to have worked!

My phone first stopped responding (home button or virtual home button). I turned it off, and it would not turn on again with either button, or with connecting to my computer. I could call my iPhone from another phone - it rang.

So I backed it up to my computer and tried the suggestion of holding down on/off and home buttons simultaneously until apple appeared. Hey presto. Seems to have revived it. Hope it's not time to retire the poor "old" phone.

Thanks nemipk! Your solution was the only one that worked to get my 4S back on! First time it has ever gone black (and it was fully charged). For me, the screen was black, but Siri would still randomly say she "didn't understand that". She couldn't respond or do anything else though. The circumstance when mine went black was that I had been taking a lot of photos and messing with the flash setting and deleting pics. I did notice that the phone got very warm in the corner where the camera lens is. After I got the phone to come back on and swiped it went right to camera mode and screen went black again. I got it to come back on the same way as the first time and this time I noticed the my wallpaper/swipe screen wavered & faded a little and it just looked oddish. Then I noticed it was actually a photo of my screen, not the real deal. I hit the trash can and deleted it, then I could see I was back (or still) in camera mode. I clicked on all the flash settings......on...off...auto, left it on auto, then hit the home button and got back to all my apps screen. All has been well since then. Knock on wood. Totally weird to me....I'm not a phone guru and totally don't get how the image of my swipe screen became a photo in my photo stream file, but nemipk's solution was the only thing that worked to get my phone running again.

I had the same situation this morning when the screen on my IPhone 4 went black. It wasn't the battery because it had been charging all night. I called the phone and it rang so I knew it worked. It appears to be just the screen.

So I googled " what is wrong when the IPhone 4 screen goes black?". The instructions were to hold down the power button ( top right hand side on the IPhone 4) and the Home button ( at the center bottom front of the IPhone 4). Hold down both buttons for 10 seconds and the Apple logo appears. Wait a minute + more and the screen re-appears.

Why this happened I don't know..... but the process fixed the issue. I hope it works for you as well.

I have the same issue, on my 4S unit.

Black Screen.

Worked at 4pm then at 7pm I got the black screen.

The mute button vibrates the phone.

I tried calling, that works. Even the swipe works, but I know where that is on the screen.

Screen is still black.

Plug the phone in, computer recognizes it.

Power button works.

I have done the Home + Power countless times. But I got the black screen so I dont know what happens there.

So I thought the Digitizer was toast, but its the LCD screen that is toast. I was going to buy a digitizer, but I thought the digitizer and the LCD are the same thing. Maybe they are not.

Its very odd.

Any help with that, Digitizer and LCD screen, 2 seperate things or what?
