Is there a way to close background apps on my iPhone 3G running iOS 4.2.1? I'm getting crazy!!!

double tap the home button>on the menu dock that pops up hold your finger on the apps that you want closed. the will wiggle and show an ➖ on them...hit the ex to close them from running.

just realized that you are running 4.2.1, you should have a menu that comes up with 4.2.1 when you double click the home button.

Multitasking became available in 4.x

? can you connect your phone to itunes to see if there is another update availabe?

4.2.1 is the last update for the 3G.

It's likely running slow because of iOS4, not because of apps being open. Standard troubleshooting...

• Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
• If still a problem restore from your backup.
• If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.

You'll most likely need to restore as new to get it running as good as it can. A 3G will never run as good on iOS4 as it did on iOS3.

i know, i was wondering if maybe they were not really running 4.2.1 but thought they were. I have seen that happen more than a few times in these forums. just wanted to make sure.

The iPhone 3G is NOT capable of multitasking. That requires a 3Gs. If you have a 3G, there are no background tasks to close. The only things that can run in the background are the phone app and iPod.
