Stolen iPad & iMac

Hi all. I was called into work today as we had been burgled. Amounst other things there were two iMac, iPad 2`s and iPods stolen. Now, I had Find My iPad on my devices and location services activated. My iPad was locked and requires my pin number to unlock. I have logged into iCloud to see if my iPad has been located but no joy as yet :-( My question is, if anyone has a good knowledge of how Find My iPad works, does the device have to be actually joind to a wireless network to be tracked or simply being turned on?? Also, if the theives hooked the iPad upto iTunes and wiped it clean, would that render Find my iPad useless?

Many thanks.

The iPad needs to be connected to a network (wifi or 3G) and not already have been wiped or Find My iPad disabled on it - so if the thief has already wiped it then you won't be able to locate it.

I assume that it's been reported to the police ? As a safety precaution you should change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc.

It needs an Internet connection.

Yes, pretty much. It can be rendered useless by:

ℹ Turning off the iPad

ℹ Restoring the iPad

ℹ (If it was a Wi-Fi + 3G model) Removing the SIM Card

Luckily, since you had a passcode, it would prevent them from...

ℹ Disabling Location Services

ℹ Turning off Wi-Fi

ℹ Turning off Find my iPad

Thanks for the quick response. Yeah, the police have been informed and SOCO have been to the premises etc. The iPad2 didnt have a sim card in it. I know Find My iPad requires an internet / wifi connection but does it actually have to be joined to a network. For example the thief takes it home and enters his own home wireless SSID and joins the network.

One saving grace is that it was lacked with nmy pin number. The devices is registered with My Support Profile. I thought there was an option in my profile to report the devices as stolen, then if it`s connected to iTunes in the future, iTunes would pull the device serial number, pair it to my account then inform me, but thats hoping!

I just hope that the thiefs were spotted on CCTV somewhere............3 people with a 20' lader at midnight must show up like a sore thumb!

As long as the iPad is connected to any WiFi network you should be able to locate it.

Find my iPhone Requirements

• iOS 5 or OS X Lion v10.7.2 is required for iCloud users (iOS 3.1.3 or later is required for MobileMe users).

• iCloud account (available free with iOS 5 or OS X Lion) or MobileMe account is required.

• Internet connection is required. To be located, your iPad with Wi-Fi, iPod touch, or Mac must be connected via a registered Wi-Fi network. Your Mac must also be awake.

There is no way to report the device as stolen in your support profile. The profile only helps you get the serial number for the device so that you can inform the police, if you report the device stolen.

Bummer! It would be a good idea me thinks if iTunes pulled in the devices serial number and paired it to ones account. That way, the next time it was attached to iTunes, Apple could ping it and retrieve the location. Maybe a possible business idea there! I could make something positive out of this. Hmmmmm.
