No Flash for iPads, iPhones, or iPods

Here's why there's is no Flash available for iDevices or other mobile devices. Adobe was unable to provide a product that was suitable to the needs of battery powered mobile devices used for Internet browsing. Existing Flash technology used too much memory, ate battery life, and was buggy. Simply put Flash did not work well on mobile devices.

Apple's Steve Jobs led the escape from Flash dependency when Apple introduced the iPhone, and later introduced the iPad. There was a hue and cry over the omission. Time proved Jobs was right on target.

So this is why there is no Flash for your iPhone or iPad or iPod nor for most SmartPhones. Flash has been abandoned by many sites in favor of supported technologies such as HTML5 or by providing their own custom app.

Here is Steve Jobs official comment on his momentous decision to omit Flash from iDevices: Steve Jobs on Flash.

Here is Adobe's later announcement to cease development of Flash for mobile devices: Adobe on Mobile Flash.

Now, you are not necessarily out on a limb. There are some apps that can display some Flash, but don't count on there ability to display anything using Flash.

Apps that can display some Flash content from the Web:

  • Puffin
  • SkyFire
  • Photon Flash
  • Browse2Go
  • iSwifter

Also, note that many sites that use Flash provide their own app for accessing their material. So check with your favorite sites and find out if "there's an app for that."

Exactly what pages do you want to visit? I can quickly test the site for you (as I've done on several occasions here at the Apple support forums, see e.g. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4048509?tstart=0 and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4045831?tstart=0 ) so that you don't end up having to pay for Flash browsers you may not use at all in the future.

If you don't want to tell us or want to do some testing yourself, go for iSwifter and / or Puffin. They're the two best Flash players. The former browser even has a free trial version and the latter doesn't cost much either.

have now given up on making Flash Player for any mobile devices.

That is not true, they have stopped producing the browser variant for mobile OS's, and instead moved to app based Flash Player called Adobe Air (Flash inside an app)

And if you are waiting on HTML5 the wait is over, it's been deemed dead fish.

Sad news for the mobile web world, Wooga, a major social game developer, is abandoning its HTML5 efforts in favor of native apps.

As the fourth-largest game developer on the social network, Wooga was chosen to be one of the first partners to develop a game using HTML5, which would enable users to play games on Facebook through either a browser or a mobile device. However, the company has told AllThingsD that it is planning to announce today that the experiment has been largely unsuccessful, and that it will no longer make games in HTML5. …

As one of the biggest game developers on Facebook, Wooga will continue to develop Facebook games using Adobe’s Flash technology

Facebook as also turned it's back on HTML5, and has removed it's HTML5 IOS app in favor of a native app.

The day for mobile OS's are coming to an end, were going to be carrying full fledged x86 OS's inside our mobiles very soon, and without stupid limitations like no Flash, which has been baked into windows 8.

Actually your a little behind, Microsoft anounced ....

the ARM-only Windows RT will also include Flash support,

And yes Adobe Air is not only for Actionscript 3 code, it also supports html and javascript (not java), just like the Adobe Flash Web plugin also supports javascript and html, it has done so for nearly 8 years.

However, my point that Adobe has moved away from the mobile web plugin and instead pushed it into an app called Adobe Air still stands.

Adobe AIR internally uses Adobe Flash Player as the runtime environment

And my point about mobile being a dying breed is also true, with windows 8 in the game now it's only a matter of time untill Walmart and everyone else has windows 8 tablets for $200, and you know within 5 years they will be as common as laptops are today. Mobile will be a thing of the past as everywhere you turn tablets phones laptops ultrabooks will all be running windows 8, and they will be everywhere like windows is today.

It will be hard to convince someone to buy a mobile only tablet, when they can grab a windows 8 version for a few hundred at walmart.

With over 85% market share, it would be hard to fail.

The iPad only has 0.9% market share and it's considered a succes. By that notion, windows could lose 84% of its market and still be a success, which we all know is not going to happen.

What is more likely to happen is in 5 years time prices will hit rock bottom and form factors will be through the roof like we see today with netbooks and laptops.

And when you can pick up a full x86 system on a tablet at walmart for $200 mobile is dead.

The term mobile is changing from what once ment low power low capable OS, to now refering to a form factor where full fledged OS's will reign supreme.

And your claim mobile is dead? Too funny to even argue about.

Just think of todays windows laptop market, now replace laptop with tablet. This is what you will see within 5 years, and any tablet not running a full x86 OS will be dead in the water. Just like a laptop not running a full OS is dead in the water (chrome books)

Windows 8 is going to do this.
