my headphone jack is not working. i've tried the headphones on different devices and they work fine. When i go into system preferences and sound and click on the output tab it says digital out. shouldn't it say headphones?

tried it and it still doesn't work. It will recognize it for a couple of seconds but if i move the headphones it will go back to digitial out.

Do you see red light in the headphone port?
If so, plug the headphone into and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswtch inside the port.
Sound out put may be stuck in the digital mode.

nope no red light. i was trying to avoid a trip to the apple store but i guess i have no choice.
