For what it is worth, three computers later I have got my iPad recovered. Had to use a iMac in the end and followed the instructions in the Apple KB article.

Also made sure I turned off the firewall, used a genuine Apple cable and of course the iMac. Doing the same on a MacBook Pro didn't work. Also didn't work on a PC.

Frustraing indeed.

Hi, I'm having a similar issue and would be grateful for any help provided.

I updated my iPod touch last night and during the update (while connected to a PC) it flashed an error code and now the device is stuck in recovery mode.

I had done a backup to the computer, however, the issue is that I have audio notes on my iPod that I suspect will be erased (via iTalk app). If I understand correctly, such data does not get backed up (and because of the large data usage wasn't backed up to iCloud) and if I do restore my device I will lose the data.

I've tried TinyUmbrella and a whole array of programs to kick the device out of recovery mode. I've also tried these programs on both a mac and a PC. My iTunes is current on both computers. I've also tried Wondershare Dr. Fone in order to see if I could somehow access the data and download it.

If anyone has advice about how to either a) get it out of recovery mode or b) get to the audio files and download them I would be eternally grateful.

Hi everyone! Thank you for all the help & suggestions!

I eventually put my iPod into DFU mode, launched iBackup Extractor, and was able to pull all the audio files off (this program didn't work for me when I wasn't in DFU mode-so make sure it's in DFU).

I then turned off DFU and hit restore to factory settings. The first time it failed (I suspected a weak wifi signal) so I plugged in the ethernet cable. Hit restore again and it worked and finally restored from the backup on my computer. Oddly, almost all apps were missing but the audio files I was trying to recover were still on the iPod. 😕

Anyways, thank you for all the help!

Try to put your iPhone/iPad in DFU mode and then restore it.

You can try these steps below:

1. Try another USB cord.

2. Restart your computer for a try.

3. Hold the power button, it might restart your iPhone.

4. Update your iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPhone.

If iTunes can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help > run diagnostics.

On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPhone and then restore it.

Ok I get the message from iTunes that it cannot read my iPhone. So it says "Go to the Summery tab in iPhone Preferences and click restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings".

First off. IF iTunes is supposed to be so connected to my iPhone and they pretty much force you to use iTunes to put everything on it (which you don't have to do with an Android) why is it they don't even use the same terminology? I DO NOT have "preferences" on my iPhone I have "settings" AND there is no "summery" tab anywhere in "settings". I am assuming "preferences" is "settings" because there's no "preferences" anywhere on my phone. And of course there's no "summery".

Anyway I don't care because it's not even actually "my" iPhone. There is no way in **** I would buy one of these. I'm just trying to fix it for someone else. This why I use Windows and Android. I never have a problem putting music on my Android or pictures or anything else.

I just think it's hilarious that Apple forces people to use iTunes with their iPhone and they don't even use the same terminology on iTunes as they do this piece of s%$# phone.

Ditto! I'm SO frustrated, itunes said it was a 6 minute download, now it's taking 30+ minutes to restore from backup. What a pain in the neck!

Apple, get with the program. I hate that retro and clunky iTunes is the grand central for all iphone and ipad updates. I don't know why it's so difficult for iTunes to tell me that a software update is going to take an hour....c'mon!

Same Here!

I have windows 8 enterprise OS and iTunes ver. 10.5.0.142. I was upgrading my iPad to IOS 6.1.3. After finishing the upgrade my iPad Reboot and currently stucked-up in a plug-in screen and iTunes Logo. When I try to connect it to the iTunes pop-up message appear saying " iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes." In short, I push the restore button then another pop-up message appear saying " The iPad software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later." I tried many ways but still no luck. I repeatedly reboot the iPad and open the iTunes still the same problem. I try also to uninstall the iTunes and installed the lower version but still the same problem, I even check the firewall if the ITunes was block or My privileges is administrator to run the iTunes or even reset my winsock but the problem still remain. PLEASE HELP! Thank you in advance!!!
