I am in the exact same boat you are except with an iPhone 4. Over the passed couple of months, the "other" category has grown to occupy 6.5 GB of my hard drive. I've tried everything: restoring to factory settings, deleting everything one at a time - you name it I tried it. It seems the more stuff I delete, the more stuff is taken up by Other. Example: I delete 1 Gb worth of pictures and Other grows by 1 Gb. I've tried taking it to the Apple store and no one there had a clue. They sent me away and told me to come back with the computer I'm sinking it with (are you kidding me)? This has been the must frustrating and unacceptable product and customer services I've ever experienced.
If you delete on iPhone 4 instead of taking off the content in iTunes, it stays on the device as other every time you sync it on your computer the unneeded stuff should go away on other
@georgianafrompeoria had the answer that helped me.
After updating to iOS 6, when I would connect my iPhone to iTunes, I would find that the entire contents of my iPhone were now classified as "Other," including all photos, music, and apps. This would be 7GB or more of Other. When I tried to sync, there would iTunes would try to tack my music and photos and apps onto the end of the mysterious Other, but there wouldn't be enough space.
I did restores from backups, but it would not solve the problem. The only thing that helped that I tried was to restore my iPhone and set it up as new, losing everything on my phone that was not backed up or stored in the cloud.
When I got my new iPad for Christmas and updated it, I found I had the SAME problem on my next sync, and I absolutely did not want to start restoring my iPad as I had done with my phone. georgianafrompeoria's solution to do a hard restart worked!
Hold the lock button and home button at the same time until you see the Apple logo. It may take a while. You can release the buttons when you see the Apple. After your device restarts (I did this on my iPad), try syncing again. My "Other" went back down to a manageable 220MB.
Isnt it a bit stupid on an ipod 4 that is meant to be 8gb there is really 5.9 gb and on top of that there oer a gig worth of 'other' so an ipod 8gb us really not even 5gb. Thats false advertising to be honest dont understand how apple get away with it
No not really software takes up space and apple has discontinued the 8gb line of iPods because they realized 8 is way too small for most people
Well apple knows we need the software so they should make them a few gig more to make up for the space, theyve disontinued them after 4 previous versions so theres stil people with them
Because the iOS software was never that big in the beginning so dedicated storage was not needed but it grows every year so that's why they are increasing the standard memory size
I just updated to ios6 and had over 9gb of "other" This is just about how much storage I was using for pics & videos. When I checked my camera album on my phone it was empty. So I checked it again, a few hundred pics populated (weird right?). I continue to toggle in and out of viewing the pictures by hitting the home button then going back into view my pictures. Just about everytime I toggle in and out I get more picture coming back (you will notice the # of pics you have growing when you re enter the camera app....) This is abit tedious but it seems to be working. What a strange bug.
I think it is happening because I dont choose to sync any picture folders - Insted what I have always done was just NOT delete the pics off my phone that I want to keep on it. I think most people delete photos at time of import and sync what they want later (probably what I will start doing moving forward)
Hope this helps.
georgianafrompeoria can you Plx help me......

So why are they requiring 2.9gb and have taken instead 6gb.Now will i lose my storage
Please answer bro!!!!!! As soon as possible
Your best bet is to save your pictures/videos or anything else important on your computer if you have one then do a complete restore as a new device or taking it to your local Apple store to see if they have answers or contact online support. It's more of a software glitch and sounds difficult to fix rather then an easy reset or restore. So do a restart by pressing the home and lock button then restore as a new device. If that doesn't work take it to Apple
Hi, You seem to have quite a grip on the situation, I think I'm going to have restore my IP4 as a new device unfortunately, but I have different question. Do u think it possible I will be able to 'import contacts from SIM card' to stop me having to input them all again?
Basically on Saturday my phone stopped syncing music from iTunes, the tracks are all greyed out in iTunes on my Mac and simple don't appear on the phone. I've trawled this community and the rest of the web, tried many different solutions but with no success.
Unfortunately I have little experience with SIM cards since I am a Verizon customer but you might be able to sync contacts using a different emIl service I.e gmail, yahoo, etc. as for iTunes maybe uninstall it then reinstall.
My 32 GB 4S is at an ungodly 10.3 gigs of other, this is ridiculous. Also iCloud is rendered useless since it tells me it needs 8.6 Gigs to sync when i dont even have any photos selected or even app data or any mail! This is horrifying.
After much searching I found a way to fix this issue but it requires you to use a 3rd party program called iExplorer
http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/
Install the program. You do not have to buy it unless you want to. Fix works with demo mode.
All the corrupted data will be gone and your Media will be back on your device.
I would only recomend doing this if you really have an issue. I havent heard of anyone having problems with this solution but who knows.
Please if you experiance problems with this solution. Write a reply.
Hi Raqtor, This method worked for me and I suspect that since IOS6 has removed podcasts from itunes and stored them in a new app, the podcasts were the actual corrupted data...
I can now enjoy 3.8GB of added storage on my 16GB Iphone 4S which is pretty much valuable considering the price per GB at apple ^^
Thanks.
