I may work in the 'Outback' but live in newcastle, near sydney, representing a cool 8 million people in the region, in one of the worlds strongest economies. Our dollar kicks the greenback to **** at the moment, and is getting up there against the Euro, Yen and GBP. its not about the quantity of people, it's the quality thanks. I used it (apple Maps) in Paris and southern france a couple of weeks back, and its just a weak there. Im glad you pride youself on your points, it some achievement. I'll recommend Apple print you a badge. Keep on preaching genius.

Hey, I think we are starting to get off track from the original question of this post, so stop. Yes I agree, Apple has some work to do on their mapping app, proven by the Apple CEO making the decision to remove their executive in charge of mobile operating system. The question has been answered, you can't remove the app. Now since Google is available for download from Apple, they need to make it feasible to be able to delete the app. I don't want to hide it on some back page, I want to prevent it from taking up space on my iPhone, for an App I probably won't use for a while.

It really is strange how Apple seem to get away with forcing its users to have their own map and web browser software installed... Where as Microsoft aren't? Microsoft being the ones who got sued for having Internet Explorer being the only default option within its operating system... Cough Apple... For one Apple maps are complete garbage and secondly the map data comes from TomTom unless they have changed that. P.S. I will never purchase another Apple product again, complete overpriced rubbish.

My goodness. What inane comments. "Work in progress" in the real world means it's crap that's not fit for consumption by humans. Apple's market share has nothing to do with this because Android phones sell many times over what business Apple does with its devices. You can paint it with as many apple-colored rationalizations as you want, but what you have here is a substandard application that was not ready for prime time and was foisted for marketing reasons on an unsuspecting gaggle of iFools who think paying for form over function is the way it should always be, regardless of the risks involved. Someone in management with a chip on their shoulder or burr up their behind over Google made a very, very stupid decision. Instead of becoming the resident rationalizer, you should be the resident apologist. Apple Maps *****, period. Google Maps is superior in every way. Admit it and move on, otherwise all you are doing is making sure this fiasco is treated the same way people treat Microsoft over Windows Vista -- they will never live that one down, and so far it looks like neither will Apple.

Stop being a troll; you said he lived in a remote area he said that actually lived in sidney. Has apple fixed the issues where they pasted aerial maps without correction as if they were from satellites? My GIS professor nearly bust a gut laughing when he showed us what they did wrong. There will always be errors but thy could at least make an effort.

You are a little late to the game. This discussion was taking place back in January. You picked an odd time to join in, the day after Google rolls out ads in its maps.

In addition to missing those dates, you seem to have missed other pertinent details. The threadjacker in question used a standard tactic of claiming that Google works much better in remote areas. Considering that Google requires a high-bandwidth, always-on internet connection, I asked how this was possible in a remote area without people or wireless coverage. That is when the venue magically changed to Sydney.

I don't know what you are talking about with "pasted aerial maps". What is an "aerial map"? Like everyone else, Apple uses a mix of satellite and aerial imagery. There are some artifacts present in the 3D views but Apple has made very good progress in fixing those.

GIS products typically start small and take many years to mature. There has never been a mass-market introduction of a brand-new GIS product like this before. A good GIS professor would take the opportunity to show how a GIS system works, while the seams in Apple Maps are still big enough to peek through. Apple Maps has problems with duplicate geographic names that are common in the UK and Australia. It also has trouble reconciling data from multiple sources. It has an excellent algorithmic basis but doesn't always reflect real-worl modifications that people have done to cartographic designs after the fact. Of course, this information is only useful to people who are interested in how GIS works inside. If your only interest is in teaching which button to press in ESRI, then "busting a gut laughing" might be the better course of action.
