I bought the HDMI converter for my latest iPad. I can see everything on my TV screen except when using Amazon Instant Video, then only the sound works. Is this a DRM issue or something else ?

It is up to the app developer whether they allow video out from the app.
Hbo, amazon, etc do not allow it due to copyright and licensing issues.

That's ridiculous. There are tons of Blueray players that have AIV; what difference is it make if I watch a movie on my iPad or on my TV...
