Why won't my iPhone earphones fit into my iPad?

Why won't my iPhone earphones fit into my iPad?

I can't seem to fit the earphones into the hole at the top left of the iPad, without feeling I'm going to break it. Do I need some special iPad ones or will my iPhone 4 ones work if I push harder?

It's a standard 3.5 mm earphone socket, the same as on your iPhone, so your earphones should fit. Does the socket appear to blocked ? It can be quite a tight fit, so you may need to push the earphones in quite firmly
