iPhone 5 screen dims by itself..

This has happened about 6 times since day of release.. while using the phone, in an app, the screen will suddenly go to what I'd guess is the lowest dimming setting.. in the dark I see that the apps are still running, just barely visible. If I can navigate back to the brightness setting, the phone shows it to be at max brightness with auto brightness turned off... the screen stays dim until I move the slider.. as soon as the slider moves the phone lights back up...

I can't force this to happen.. it has been random.. but it has been at least once a day since I received it.

My son say his did this as well.. once..

Anybody else?

Well here's an update. I restored my phone to factory settings on the 23rd of October as recommended by the genius bar. I was going to write and say the problem had gone away.

But today when I activated Siri from the lock screen, the phones screen went Dim again. Auto brightness is off.

It seems to only happen from the lock screen when I activate Siri. Now I can't replicate it again.

It's never gone dim from any other screen except the lock screen.

I am convinced this is a software bug in iOS 6.

I hope Apple are reading this thread and do something about it. It just seems very intermittent and hard to replicate. That's why I think it's a bug.

Also the fact that it's happening on the iPhone 4S is more proof that its bug and not a hardware issue on the iPhone 5. People only seem to be experiencing this after iOS 6 update.

@Someguy385...when exactly has the screen dimmed by itself for you and your wife? When in the lock screen or not the lock screen?

Also the static that goes across the keyboard should be fixed now in the latest update 6.01.

My iPhone 5 has only gone dim on the lock screen, but my wifes 4S will actually go dim while in use during mail, safari, texting or the home screen. We both have to go into settings and just move the brightness bar then it brightens up again. It's got to be a bug in iOS 6 becuase she never had this problem before it AND it can't just be an iPhone 5 issue since it's happening to her 4S.

PS glad the keyboard bug got fixed.

I also think its a bug. But it hasn't been acknowledged yet by Apple.

It definitely seems like iOS 6 bug. As quite a few people have the issue. It's weird that it happens while your wife is using an App. I haven't heard that before.

I also fixed it the way you suggested.

I'm still wondering if I should go back to the Genius Bar again or just wait and see if it gets fixed.

I really don't want a new phone as works well otherwise.

It is very intermittent though. Doesn't happen all the time.

I have the iphone 5 and the screen has gone dark on me twice. So much so that I can't even

see the screen. I can hear that it is on but unable to even check the brightness setting. Very frustrating. The first time the phone was dark for at least two hours before it came back on. I had been out in the sun so I thought that may have something to do with it. This most recent time I was in the scrabble app and then the screen suddently went dark. So far it has been 6 hours and the screen has not reappeared. Going to apple today and hope for a fix.

I am also having this issue. It has only happened twice in the last week.

I have an iphone 5, got it a month ago. Never had an iphone before so set it up from new.

Haven't done any restores yet.

Basically it happens when its locked, i go back to unlock it and the screen is dim. I have to go into the settings and when i tap the slider for brightness (at about 45%) it jumps back to normal brightness. Auto brightness is turned off.

Appears to be a software issue to me. I will talk to a genius and see what they say.

I am also having this problem with my 5. I hope the fix is a quick update sometime soon.

I've figured out how to trigger the screen dimming on my phone. Lock the phone, then press the top lock button turning the unlock screen on then quickly press the home button without taking a picture. If I do this a few times in a row the screen will dim. The dimming has also happened to me while using the phone but this is the only way I've found to make it happen every time.

On a different note, my wife has been having other screen issues where her 5. It will flicker in some apps and the screen will have lines running across it (looks like a TV with a bad signal). We are making an appointment to take hers into the store because it's happening so frequently.
