iPhone 5 can't use microphone button in notes app

I have a iPhone 5 and whenever I open the notes app and try to use the microphone button it is will not let me click on it. It is also not lit up like the other buttons. It worked when I got the phone but now I can't use it. It works for everything else as far as I know.
