game center ipad vs iphone

My friend and I play a few games together (Tikal, LeHavre, Tigris and Euphrates and Ra) - he on his iphone and me on my ipad. Up until yesterday this was not a problem. All of a sudden however, if I want to challenge him via the inbuild game center support I get the following messages:

- Unable to create match. Please try again later.

- The requested operation could not be completed due to an error communicating with the server.

This happens with all the games I have mentioned. HOWEVER, if i challenge another friend of mine who plays on an iPad, it goes through fine.

Why is this?

Has something changed in the last few days?

Can we get back to allowing cross hardware platform game play?

OS version on the iPad is 6.0 (10A403).

My model is MD330X.

I have tried restarting the apps after killing them as well as restarting the iPad.

Thanks for your help.

I'm having this problem as well. This is happening for me with only one user and it is across multiple games (Ticket to Ride and Letterpress). And what is even more odd is that the user in question can start a game with me but I can't start one with her. We can play that game to conclusion but once it is done, I still cannot start a game with her. She must start it with me. At the same time, I can start games with other people, no problem; however, I just can't start a game with her.

I have confirmed that we are both on the same version of iOS (6.0 Build 10A403) and are both using iPhones (me an iPhone 4S and she an iPhone 4)

Anyone come up with a fix?

OK I found the answer! It turns out that the user with whom I couldn't create a match had "Game Invites" turned off. Once we turned them on, I was able to successfully invite her to a game.

Here's how your friend will turn Game Invites on:

1. Go into Game Center and go to the "Me" tab.

2. Scroll to the bottom and tap your user name at the very bottom of the screen.

3. A pop up will ask you if you want to View Account, Sign Out or Cancel. Select "View Account"

4. It will ask you for your Game Center user password

5. Once you are logged in, the first option will be a switch to allow "Game Invites" which will probably be turned off. Your friend needs to turn this to the "On" position.

For the person I was having problems inviting, that switch was turned off. Once she turned it on, I was able to successfully invite her to a game.

Note to any Apple Engineers who are combing the threads: it would make it much easier for us if the error message actually pointed us to the solution. An error of "Unable to create match. Please try again later." doesn't give us anything to point us in this direction. A better error would be "Opponent has Game Invites turned off in their Game Center Account."
