Mac Mini 2012 video blinking out

Dear all, I have exactly the same problem connecting a 24" Asus FullHD Screen via HDMI-DVI.

Apple Support was not aware of the problem yesterday and told me to reset PRAM 😉

I will also try Thunderbolt-HDMI Adapters, HDMI-HDMI-Cable etc., but it will take some days to arrive and test.

Meanwhile a conclusive resolution?

I have a MacMini i5, lowest model.

Problems happen with regular work but also within games like Warcraft.

If I unhook and hook the cables, the signal is back, but I also notice a VERY hot HDMI-Adapter!

Apple has no clue yet...

Apple is actually aware of this problem. A number of people (including myself) from this thread have been contacted by Apple engineers collecting data so they can fix this. You contacted support so of course they are not aware of the problem until it is officially documented but first the cause needs to be identified. Right now, only engineers and a select few representatives know about it and are working on it. If they call you, do your best to give them as much information as you can, even if you think some of it is irrelevant, so that this can be fixed eventually.

im not saying this is a solution, but i have noticed this exact problem on my 2011 mac mini and only while im watching movies, AND when it happened, my sound bar, which is hooked up to the tv, not the mac mini, would also turn off and back on immediately following the screen flickering. it does not happen while i have itunes, safari or a word prcessor open. It also happens when the video player is in the foreground or running byitself. I just unplugged my HDMI and plugged it back in, making sure it was snug with a little slack. since then i have not noticed it occur again, but again, this could just be coincidence. it may also be my hdtv, although it doesnt happen while my ps3 is running or when im using my tvs netflix feature.

I have used a Mac Mini 2010 with the TV and never had a blinking issue with it. The 2012 blinks right after I turn it on and log in.

I have also noticed that my two Seagate external hard drives behave differently: although the LED lights are turned on in Seagate Dashboard, only one tiny light turns on. I have reconnected them to the 2010 Mac Mini, using the same connections and they work like before, all lights on. Not with the 2012 Mac Mini, though.

after lots of talks to several Apple Technicians, Support and Customer Care we have finally decided to exchange the Mac Mini to a new one.

Apparently the problem is only in some machines and might be a defect graphic card.

It has nothing to do which monitor you try.

Nothing to to with the ports because we see these problems with HDMI-DVI Adapter, HDMI-HDMI cable, and Thunderbolt-HDMI Adapters.

Also there is no difference between i5 and i7 machines.

Hopefully the new MacMini will be without fault...

Just had this happen to my new Mac Mini I bought several days ago.

I exchanged my Mac mini and I am still having these issues. I don't think it is just a few Mac minis, I think this is more widespread than we think. I just read a post on here titled "screen goes black" where a person is having the same issue with the previous generation Mac mini. The post was created back in April so he was using OSX Lion (10.7).

I got a new Mac mini i5 (late 2012) today and I have the same problems. This is my setup:

(Mac mini (2012) w Intel HD Graphics 4000 -> HDMI -> Yamaha RX-A810 -> HDMI -> Samsung UE55D8005)

I get random videoblackouts and sometimes lilac screen and "color noise". My problems are much more frequent, every other minute (random).

I can understand that there could be problems when you put a receiver in the videochain but it´s hard for me to accept that the old mini 2011 worked in this setup and the new one doesn´t. Both the TV and the reciever is less than one years old.

I seem to be fortunate to not have frequent glitches.... just one here and here, and so far, not one during video playback. Support has contacted many of us, and I was asked if I could provide a video of the issue. I was able to capture it on video, and I suspect others could too. Apple has my video, along with still photos of each phase of this glitch. For me, it's black, snow, lilac/purple, more snow, black again, normal video for about 1 second, black flash, DONE. The entire sequence lasts about 5 seconds.

One thing I noted, in my case, was I finally noted the exact time of the problem. There were no Console Log messages at this time. Previously I has guestimated the time of failure and saw video sync messages - but that was probably me switching inputs or resolutions.

yes - HTPC users beware. This is the first time I decied to be an early adopter..... of course there would be issues.

I'm not too keen on a new mac, and it seems replacements are not helping.

I am going to go replace my Mac mini again sometime this weekend to see if the problem continues. I am almost positive it will happen again but for the sake of troubleshooting I will do it.

Just wanted to chime in that I'm seeing the same thing with my new mini 6,2 right out of the box (2.6Ghz i7, Fusion drive). Using the HDMI port hooked up to a DVI monitor. I've upgraded the RAM (from OWC) to 16GB. I set it up last night and have now seen my second screen blank.

Possible tips...

same here, screen turn green then black and then to normal in a few seconds. Received yesterday and happened twice already.

I'm having this problem as well. It's happened 4 times so far in about 4 hours of computer use. Doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing. Happened once while web browsing, once while playing Diablo 3, and the other 2 I wasn't actually on the computer, just noticed when I walked by. Screen goes black for 5-15 minutes and eventually comes back. Any sound that's playing continues on, Diablo was still running fine (I could still see myself on my wife's computer and could still move around). My wife's seems to be doing fine so far.

I've tried swapping our monitors (Apple displays from ~2006). Didn't help.

I swapped the stock memory back in to see if that affects anything. I was running 16GB of Crucial RAM. I'll update if/when the screen blacks out.

Very frustrating, but not the end of the world. A software fix would be really really nice, but I suspect I'll have to send it back.

Played some more Diablo 3 with no problems on my computer, but my wife's went black for a split second. Ugh.

Going out for a split second is much more preferable than 5-15 minutes at a time like mine, but still a nuisance on a new computer.
