remote app not working with iTunes 11

The remote app on my iPhone (latest version of remote app and IOS 6.0.1) has limited ability to control my iTunes library on my iMac (OS X 10.6.8) compared to earlier versions of iTunes. This occurs whenever anything is typed in the search iTunes window on my iMac. This example is when iTunes is displaying the "Songs" view, but I believe it's present in all iTunes 11 views. Once a text string is typed in the search window, the iTunes window on my Mac only displays items matching that search text string. This is normal. On my remote app on my iPhone 4s, I can browse my full iTunes library. This is also expected behavior. From my remote app, I can play any song in my library that is also displayed on the iMac iTunes 11 window (limited by the search window string.) This is normal.

This is where things get odd. If I use my remote app to browse to a song in my library that is NOT displayed on my iTunes 11 window, the song will not play. It gives the following error message:

"The song "x" could not be played because the original file could not be found."

This is unexpected becuase previous versions of iTunes allowed the remote browsing to supercede any iTunes search window text displays. I can only use the remote app to play whatever is in the iTunes windows on my iMac.

Another thing that's really odd is that the error message on the remote appears to be a bug. When it says "the song "x" could not be played...", the error message actually lists the "artist" and not the "song". Maybe that's the source of the problem, as the remote app error message is confusing the "song" with the "artist". The error message is:

"The song "[artist, not song]" could not be played because the original file could not be found."

Has anyone else seen this? If so, is there a fix? (Other than going to the iTunes 11 window on my iMac and clearing the search string. Sort of defeats the purpose of the remote if you have to run back to your desktop.)

Also, iTunes 11 INCREDIBLY slow, but you already have numerous complaints about that. Disabling "Search Entire Library" improved iTunes 11 from being unusable, to undesirable.

Thank you

I have the same problem constantly. Remote app 3 on iOS 5 and/or 6, with iTunes 11.01. I can't seem to fix it no matter what I do. The bottom line: iTunes 11 is a disaster....along with iOS 6.

I wish I had never updated either one. I still have one iOS device (my phone) on iOS5 thank God.

I don't know what's going on at Apple these days. Every new software update is a total crapshoot. And these are not new updates. They are months old. But they tend to remain worse than the versions they replaced. Reminds me way too much of Windows in the old days: "Updates" solely for the sake of change, complete with a myriad of bugs. Whatever happened to "It just works."?

Has anyone found a solution to this yet? I was able to solve this problem about a week ago using the suggested log out of iTunes store, reload Remote app, etc. workaround, but that isn't even working anymore. I can play anything that is on a playlist, but if I just select an artist, or an album, I get the "song could not be played because the original file could not be found" error message.

I found found no fix that sticks.

As for a workaround, what I have done, while a bit of a kludge, does allow me to stream music remotely.

I shared my iTunes library, connected to it using the "Music" app on my iPhone, and then used Airplay to stream from my iPhone to my Airport Express.

Certainly an inelegant solution, but it does work.

I would strongly urge anyone following this thread to log a bug with Apple, and reference this thread.

Thanks BG. Using the "Music" app is a good trick. Actually didn't know I could access my library this way, even though I've wanted to in the past and couldn't figure out how (it was simply because I hadn't logged in via the prefs under the phone Settings). Only problem is if you have multiple Airport Expresses, as I do, you can only stream to a single one from the phone, and it doesn't include the computer/source. Oh well - it is a workaround.

Using this method reveals how really messed up the Remote app is, particularly in how I navigate through my very large library. Reportng more bugs/issues.

Hi all,

Until they solve this bug I found a temporary solution that worked for me.

Since Remote works while you see the album/song that you want to play, just make that iTunes show all your Library:

On iTunes window Library click on Songs view to show all songs. If you have enabled the Column browser, click on 'All' item list at the top of every list (Genres, Artist and Albums). That will make iTunes show all your songs.

Hope that helps.

Thank you everyone for your replies. It's good to know that I'm not the only one seeing this bug.

I have to say that none of the fixes are really working for me. From what I can tell, this bug is present anytime there is text typed in the "iTunes" search window, or when only a subset of my music library are selected (albums, artists, genre, whatever) within iTunes window on my desktop. Once my library has been narrowed to a subset of all my music by one of these means, I can only use the remote to play tunes from that small subset of my library OR I can play anything from any playlist. Weird.

Trying the fixes above (reinstalling iTunes, restarting, selecting "All" in the iTunes window, etc) are "fixing" the bug because now my entire library is displayed in the desktop iTunes window. As soon as I either type text into the iTunes search window, or select only a subset of music in my iTunes window, the remot app bug appears again. At least it's consistent.

The only "workaround" I've found is to install a VNC app on my iPhone. This allows me to log into my desktop via VNC and manually clear the iTunes display to show my entire library. It's definitely not a "fix" for the bug, but it saves me from running back upstairs to my iMac just to clean up the iTunes library display. Ugly, and not a free workaround, but it works.

Just chiming in here as I am experiencing the same issue. No fixes here other than quitting iTunes and restarting but the problem does come back from time to time. Details:

Mac is running 10.7.5

iTunes 11.0.1(12)

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.2

Remote is latest version as of this reply.

I have rebuilt my iTunes library, no help.

I do not use WiFi Sync for my iPhone though I did in the past.

This happens with another iPhone in the house that is identical which has never sync'ed to this library.

Hope this helps get some more traction on this issue. It is SO annoying.

Jan 16, 2013 3:39 PM in response to steve_kn

I think I've figured the issue (at least for me). It's that on the iTunes application, I have chosen the SONG view, and then have the COLUMN BROWSER turned on with an ARTIST filter.

On the Remote App, if I choose a song from that Artist, it plays fine. If I choose a song from a different Artist, I get the failure message. Selecting the ARTIST View in iTunes does not exhibit this bug (i.e. can play any artist, not just the one that it was filtered to).

I'm on the phone with Apple Tech support trying to get them to forward this bug to the iTunes and/or Remote Application developers. Can anyone else verify that this is the root cause for them too? That is, selecting ALL for the Filter, or not using the SONG view with an ARTIST filter means the problem doesn't occur?

Jan 16, 2013 3:53 PM in response to mem10123

I think you have something there. I am able to duplicate your findings.

When I have an artist filter selected, I can play any song from the selected artist, but get the error when I select a track from a different artist. When I select "ALL" from the artist list, I appear to be able to select and play anything. To verify, I then filtered to a different artist, was able to play tracks only from that artist, then I again removed artist filtering, and it allowed access to all.

I guess the trick for the time being will be leave iTunes without any filtering applied if I plan to use Remote.

Good find!

I wonder if this is ONLY an issue for those of us that use the column browser rather than any of the new views?
