Hi Guys,
Is there a way of transferring data (music, movies etc) from an external harddrive directly to an iPad Mini?
The reason I ask, is I'm going travelling and don't want to take my macbook with me - but I have a lot of music, movies etc that I want to take.
Is this possible?

If its a network drive, one of tese newer generations, like the ones form dlink or mybook, have an app. Which harddrive are you talking about? The one from your MacBook?
hey seppe1998, I bought just a standard 500GB external harddrive on amazon. Connects via USB.
But are you saying there are types of harddrives I could get that work directly with the iPad Mini?

There are some wifi-enabled drives that allow you to stream content to the iPad from them e.g. GoFlex Satellite and Kingston Wi-Drive are a couple of options (I haven't got any so I don't how good they are).
Perhaps you can try to look on your router if for a USB port, otherwise, you can perhaps look at a MyBook Live... 😀
The GoFlex does a great job streaming (just bought one as my Hanukkah present to self), but if the OP wants to fully transfer content to the iPad, it won't do that.

I've just come across Hyper Drive Cloud FTP - which allows you to connect any external harddrive or USB stick via WiFi.
Looks like a pretty good option.
I've also read that you can use GoodReader app to download files from harddrive to iPad.

Goodreader will do this, but you're limited to the size of the iPad - in which case you might as well use iTunes to load the media. If you want to keep larger amounts available for playing on the iPad, I'd recommend GoFlex or a similar device.
