iMessage messages only show up on iPhone and iPad, but not Mac

And this is after the update to 6.0 on iOS and all devices use my phone, and e-mail accounts, but I just get no messages within Messages for iMessages. In fact if I type a message and hit return it just dissapears into the ether, though it claims to be connected.

I have tried unconnecting both devices and restarting, and then turning on first the iPhone and iPad and then Messages on the Mac, but the same thing happens. I have also tried deleting the preferences for Messages on the mac, but it seems to be keeping accounts, so I am not sure what all the preference files should be.

I have trashed:

com.apple.iChat.StatusMessages.plist

com.apple.Messages.FileTransfers.288464DA-E8DB-5230-84A5-1C570FD99E84.plist

But when I re-open Messages, all my accounts are still there, and I still can't even see messages I send or receive any messages.

I am guessing I am missing some preference files.

I wonder if the issue is because at one point I had the beta installed, but now am runnign 10.8.2.

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 24 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670

I looked around and also removed the files:

com.apple.imagent

com.apple.imservice

And all variations on that including:

com.apple.imservice.FaceTime.288464DA-E8DB-5230-84A5-1C570FD99E84.plist

com.apple.imservice.iMessage.288464DA-E8DB-5230-84A5-1C570FD99E84.plist

com.apple.imservice.FaceTime.plist

com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist

But that didn't help either, still have all my accounts.

HI,

The Accounts as such as called back from the Keychain more then the .plists for AIM, Jabber or Yahoo or even the Subnet (Bonjour one).

Those .plists only store the server info and the Connected Stated.

Only these two refers to the iMessages Account

com.apple.imessage.bag.plist

com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist

The ones with what looks like Hexadecimal numbers to them are stores in case of a Network Boot and are not used in everyday use.

You should be using Message Menu > Preferences > Accounts > iMessage Account and the Sign Out button to remove the Apple ID in the iMessages account (You re-enter it in the Details Button)

I have not heard of this Add-on

com.geekspiff.iChatEnhancer.plist

Does it still work in Mountain Lion/Messages ver 7.0.x ?

Do you have an AIM, Jabber or Yahoo Account that you can check that you can send messages/IMs via those Services ?

(i.e is it just iMessages or the app as a whole ?)

Ok,

Are you getting any sort of Alert messages ?

Some are seeing this:-

Could not sign in to iMessage. Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again.

Others are seeing phrases that imply the name cannot be resolved.

In some cases the inability to sign in is related to the Serial Number of the Mac not appearing in the two places it should show.

Go to the Apple Icon Menu > About this Mac and click the Line with the current OS showing twice.

It will change to the Build Number (An internal Counting of the OS that Apple keeps) and then to the Serial Number.

IF it is missing then you need to visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider or a Apple Store to get it put back.

It is supposed to be "Replaced" if the Logic boards are replaced in a refurb or Repair.

HI,

I would try a PRAM reset.

Shut down the computer.

Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

Nope, have zapped PRAM 5 times, run Diskwarrior twice and Tech Tool Pro 6 from it's emergency partition.

And messages just doesn't show any messages, nor send any. It does annoyingly open when I get one though, but doesn't show it.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can try to get it running. I tried trashing all my prefs for Messages, and networks settings, and setting up the account again. I got the message on my phone on iPad of all the numbers and e-mails connected, but still nothing shows up on my mac.

Hi,

I would check Console (Applications/Utilities) and see if it is commentating on anything about Messages.

At this stage from everything you have said it seems your version of Messages is corrupt.

You may have to reinstall using the Apple Restore method.

No, it is not the version of Messenger. I extraced Messenger with Pascifist and ran that, and it has the exact same problem. It is some file Messenger is using.

There must be some other files it is not seeing.

When I try and sent a Message via Messages to an iPhone I get the warning in the Console Log:

3/6/13 8:05:29.951 AM Messages[1990]: [Warning] Updating typing guid on IMMessage from A2****E88 to 08****069

And no message is sent, and no message is shown on my end in messages.

HI,

As Mountain Lion has no Install Disks and use the "Recovery" method to reinstall the OS and the apps that come with it, where and on what were you using Pacifist ?

The two hexidecimal numbers are the accounts numbers that the iMessages are going between.

I will ask the Hosts to delete those parts.

Hi,

I am still not sure where you are extracting it from.

Messages comes in two version in Mountian Lion.

At OS X 10.8 and 10.8.1 the version is version 7.0

At OS X 10.8.2 Messages is updated to version 7.0.1

This is a common form of update used since iChat 3

However versions across OS X version do not work as some of the changes are too great and some cases the support folders have moved and even been added to over the different versions.

As you say that the version you have works with a Test user the most likely "block" would be a corrupted .plist but you have moved all of these if I remember correctly.

Go to Applications/Utilities and open Keychain Access.

You should have several "A" looking icons made up of the pen, brush and ruler.

Some should relate to your AIM/Apple IDs that can be used with the AIM Login in Messages (and other apps)

Double click these to bring up the Info Panel.

Click on the Access tab.

Check that any name is allowed access by IMAgent, Messages. IMCore and Internet accounts.

Repeat fro all names and IDS used in Messages. (Jabber/Yahoo/Google etc)

There should also be one that reads "iMessage: your AppleIDhere-AuthToken"
Check this allows the same items.

If the "Allow all Applications..." button is ticked then delete the item.

I used pascifisct on the Install OS X Mountain Lion.app which I kept around instead of letting it delete so I could update my laptop and extracted version 7.0.1 of messages.

No joy with the Keychain. All the keys were set correctly. And even if I removed them and re-entered my info iMessages is still not working.

There must be some plist file that I am missing.

iMessage messages only show up on iPhone and iPad, but not Mac
