after attempting to update the latest software release on my Iphone 4, I received an error message in Itunes and the phone is now locked. I have an image on my screen now of the Iphone connected to the ITunes account but can not get passed this

thanks but I am unable to force the device into recovery mode. Upon shutting it down and rebooting, I continue to see the image of a USB cable arrowed at the itunes

thanks for the response. It has not been hacked. This is the second time that this has happened. The last time I was forced to take the phone to the Apple store and one of their techs fixed it in a matter of seconds. Not sure what he did...
Itunes does not recognize the device and I am basically locked into the same image
If an Apple store is close probably worth another trip
and if they fix it ,find out how they did it
after following Lawrence's advise on DFU to see if that clears it
I don't believe the home button is not responding at this point either. Thus I can't force it into recovery mode
If your phone was jailbroken, this process is likely not to work.
I finally got this to work by rebooting the PC and that located the device and then I was able to go into recovery mode and then backed up.
