Trying to figure out airplane mode for traveling outside of US. Will I be charged if a caller leaves a message? Also, all of us traveling together have iphones.

Only if you are using the internet over wi-fi. You could be charged whatever your cellular provider charges for roaming cellular or data use when you use a cellular network overseas.
