Apple sent me a Verizon Sim card with me replaced iPhone 4S (Verizon). What's it for?

I recently got my iPhone replaced through Apple, and the day after I got the iPhone, I had to sign for a big High Priority envelope from Apple. All that was inside was a tiny Verizon Sim Card in a small plastic bag, with no information or anything.

What's it for? My 4S doesn't take sim cards.

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.3

I have.

I thought Verizon didn't use sim card for iPhones, but apparently they do. I noticed that the little tray on the side is for the sim card.

I put it in and restarted it, but it's odd because I activated the phone without a sim card in it.

So, I suppose the iphone I sent in to get replaced had my sim card in it, and they sent it back when they found it.

Still a little confused, but it's not a problem.
