my cousin gave me his iphone the other day and i tryed to dowload apps and it would not let me because i have ios 4.2.1 so i have asked multiple times how to do it and even tryed downloading online but none work and tryed on itunes but that said its the current version and its not so i was wondering could i go from 4.2.1 to ios 5 or 6? is it even possible? please help?:(

That usually indicates that you have an iPhone 3G, not a 3GS. Please verify the model number from Settings - General - About - Model = ???
You need to connect to a computer with iTunes, select the iPhone from the Devices list and then choose Software Update in the Summary window.
