Hi all, problem with my Mum's ipad 2: It won’t turn on unless it is connected to the electricity; it then says it is 78% charged, but then it drops out and shows a battery with a little thing like a lightning bolt. Any suggestions? She lives in woop woop so can't exactly drop into an apple store for help. Thanks!

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.

If the above doesn't work, it definitely sounds like a bad battery to me.

Thanks guys, I will get mum to try resetting and if that fails we'll go down the battery route.
Just be aware if it is the battery. Apple does not replace parts on iPads but instead replaces the whole unit. Whether they replace new or refurbished you will have to ask them. The cost of the replacement will depend on if the warranty is still covered.
