wondering if i can stream video from various sources on my ipad/iphone to my apple tv via airplay, but would like to use the ipad for other tasks (browsing w/safari for example) while the video plays on apple tv.
no thats not possible
the reason
iphone4, ipad1 and most older macs don't support airplay mirror is
because it's a very very demanding task
it have to in realtime convert what it was displaying into a
video stream (my i7 imac take about 15min to convert a 30min home movie into the same format)
and with airplay mirror it have to be don in real time
even if it was possible then your ipad would be as unresponsive as Elvis while mirroring something else

I am able to use iPad with retina display e.g. safari, mail, apps, at same time as streaming video with AirPlay via Apple TV so long as mirroring is turned off. If mirroring is turned on it does not appear to work and the video stream stops as soon as I start another task. Hope this helps.

I also can use my ipad mini with retina to send a video to my Apple TV via airplay and then use the ipad to browse the web etc. not mirror, but just send the video to Apple TV. Hope this helps!
