iPhone 5 iMessage not syncing to iPad

I just got the iPhone 5 and can't get my incoming iMessages to sync to my iPad. When I send an iMessage, I see it on both devices, however, I only recieve iMessages on the device I sent the message from. I used to have an iPhone 4 and there was no issues with syncing up the messages. Can someone please help???

Yes, both have my phone number and email address, which is the same as my apple ID. And I have both set as start new conversations with email address. I tried another friend and I was able to receive his messages on both devices. However, i'm still having the issue with the first person I was messaging. When she responds, it goes to one or the other. When I message her, she has 2 conversations open. One with my iPad and the other with my iPhone.
