Setting up apple mail account with imap fails

Hi folks.

I have a mail address from a german provider www.all-inkl.com.

My hardware is a MacBook Air 1,7 GHz Intel Core i5 with MacOSX 10.7.5

I do not succeed setting up Apple Mail (Version 5.3) for this mail address using IMAP. Strangely it works on Thunderbird 17 for Mac.

Find the settings below (those which Thunderbird accepts):

INCOMING: imap.XXXX.de – Port 143

OUTGOING: smtp.XXXX.de – Port 587

STARTTLS

Email: j.raff@XXXX.de

Username: j.raff

Apple Mail says (translated from German):

"Login at the IMAP Server 'imap.XXXX.de' failed. Make sure Username and Password are correct ..."

Does anyone have a clue?

If you have already tried this, please ignore this post.

Are you trying to set up the account automatically or manually in Mail?

Once you have entered the details at the first setup screen (full name, email address, password), hold down the option key and then press the 'continue' button, this'll allow you to manually add the data.

What happens when you try to set up the account - same error regarding the username/password?

I assume you have double-checked the IMAP and SMTP details you are using are definitely correct, same for the email account password?

Thank you for staying with me.

And, yes, I have the same error as described above.

I double checked all details.

Still, there is some ambiguity with username and servernames. Username may either be the email OR email name before @ OR client number ... Tried all.

Btw, in the Android E-Mail App it doesn't work either. I guess I have to call the provider.

Strange, if all the info you have is correct it should be easy-peasy. I guess you'll have to give them a call. Good luck.

Update: I played with some combinations of usernames and alternative server names using your "option key" set-up method. Now it works!

(Still strange. Only thing I changed in between was the password)
