My iPad has apps that I often use that will not work without iOS 6 update which for some reason is not available for the 1st iPad.

There is nothing much you can do now! Either you need to have a downgraded version of your apps which is quite impossible, or else switch to a new one! Apple upgrades its API's and it is the reason for old devices being left out!
Contact the developers of each app to ask for a version that supports
your iOS. It is up to the developer of an app to decide which versions
of iOS his app supports.
Your iPad still does what it did originally. The problem is that you cannot
upgrade to newer versions of some apps and that is a developer decision.
Some apps on my iPad 1 will not work without the UNAVAILABLE iOS 6 update...my iPad is basically useless now, what should I do?
