You have to double tap the button and then swipe from left to right to bring up airplay

You made no mention of it. It is hard to help when you give very little info on what you've tried. Yes, mirroring works with iPad 2 or later. If you are not seeing the icon then something on your network is blocking it.

First you said you didn't see the airplay icon, and now it's just the mirroring so i'm not understanding. It would help to have a screenshot.

Make sure Apple TV is up to date. Beyond that I will need a screenshot to see what is happening.

I have yet to see a screenshot. based on what you are writing it is hard to tell so without seeing for myself there is not much else I can do
