I have an iphone and both kids have ipods, how can we not share our purchases under the account?

Each device will only sync what you select.
Don't select each others stuff
Are apps automatically downloading to all devices and you want this disabled? If so, using the iOS device, go to Settings > iTunes & App Store, and disable automatic downloads. however, all iOS devices under that account will have access to purchased & downloaded apps from the App Store. You may have to make a seperate account for the kids or yourself if you dont want this. Hope this helps!
