iOS 7 wifi "unable to join the network"

I have an iPhone 5 that I upgraded to iOS 7 on 9/18/13. My phone and wifi connections worked fine until this morning 9/21.

Now when I have tried connecting to 2 different wifi networks, my phone is giving me the message "unable to join the network." I don't know why this is happening, has anyone else had this issue?

Wifi has worked the past few days since I completed the update to iOS 7. It has shown as connected a few times today, but no data will load when this happens. I am hesitant to restore the entire phone unless I am sure it will fix the issue.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!

I would recommend that everyone having this issue forward this thread address and note your problems to the major Mac blogs. If posted, Apple will certainly take notice. Given that it is not a hardware issue it seems (as we can connect occasionally at very close ranges to the AP) it certainly shouldn't be a difficult software fix for Apple if they would just acknowledge an issue, which they won't from at least my visits to the Apple Store.

Let's get some media attention on this...

Ok, I just tried Nomini's experiment of standing within 1 foot of my router, with my ipod touch 5g (running 6.0.1). Short answer: it worked for me. Before now, I have tried absolutely everything I can think of (reset, restore, dropping security from my network router, renaming my network router, etc etc etc) and absolutely nothing worked EXCEPT standing on top of my router and after a few false starts and some hard work (that little wireless wheel spinned about for the longest time), my ipod 5g joined my home network.

The weird thing I noticed though, was that my ipod has been working fine for the last year, and only the other week when I received a request to update to ios 7 (which I ignored) my wifi stopped working at home (however it works well at my workplace). Probably a coincidence but it's one that's been on my mind.

In any case, I'd like the flexibility to use wifi while not standing on top of my router, so I hope there is a patch coming out REALLY soon ... thanks Nomini for sharing!

I emailed Tim Cook, you guys could do the same. He is known to read and respond to user's email. I would really urge everyone to bring this to the attention of mac blogs and magazines. There are likely many people with this issue who have not seen these threads on support.apple.com.

The proximity to the access point seems to be a common factor for many of us. This should help clue Apple in to what the root cause of the issue is.

Okay, did an experiment. Completely restored again, setup as a new iphone, skipped appleid enrollment/sign-on. Once again, can join the router when 2 feet away. Walking 15 feet away (line of sight, no walls) yields a loss of connection.

It seems that iOS7 just completely destroyed the range of some iPhone 4S's.

Given that multiple people have verified this situation, there clearly is a repeatable issue here.

Odd: my iPad 2 has been on iOS 7 since it was released, without any Wi-Fi problems. This morning, I updated my Early Edition 2 app by Wi-Fi without any problem, went to breakfast (with Airplane Mode on, to save some battery), then returned home only to get "Unable to connect to network" error.

I've turned Airplane Mode on and off several times, and rebooted the iPad several times as well, still with no re-connection to my Wi-Fi network. My iPhone 4S is connected just fine, as is my Dell laptop -- it's just the iPad 2 that somehow forgot how to connect to Wi-Fi in the time it took me to leave, eat, and return.

The only other thing I did this morning before I left was to tell the iPad to update the Time Magazine (Newsstand) app, then try to download the latest issue of Time in that app.

So... iOS 7 on the iPad 2 just randomly forgets how to use Wi-Fi now? Or the Time Magazine app breaks iOS 7s ability to connect to Wi-Fi? WTH?!

I had to bring in my phone to the Apple Store twice. They said the software had some corruption and we should try resetting the phone and setting it up as a new phone. It worked in the store after that. But when I got home it did not work.

Brought it in the second time about a week later, and they replaced my phone as it was still in warranty. I deleted my backups previously because they said the corruption may be in there as well. So I still had to set up as a new phone, but it worked perfectly after they replaced it. Leading me to believe my device somehow became faulty.

So that is an option for anyone who is still having this issue.

I just got an iphone 5C last week for work. It connected to the router at work with no problems, but got the "unable to connect" message at home. I tried doing all of the fixes suggested here with no results. I did find on the Linksys website, I have AT&T's issued router, that if you have mac filtering turned on, the iphone will not connect. I went into the settings on my router and added the mac address for the iphone as "allowed" and can now connect to my wireless router at home. Maybe it's a router issue/setting that needs to be changed. I don't quite understand why this happened as I did not have to do that to connect my TV or laptop. Something to check into if you are still having problems connecting.

I sympathize with y'all about the ipad issues. Here is what I had to do to finally resolve this tonight. You can try it or someothing similar to see if it works for you:

I had the same issue and did some digging. Some tech stated that the new update did not like the higher network channels for some 2.4GH setups (http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wifihomenetworking/qt/wifichannel.htm).

I logged in as admin to my home router (a Netgear WNR2000 - I went here

http://www.routerlogin.netto get the instructions for logging in; if you have a different router, pull out the instructions of Google search for the specifics.) I modified the Channel from what it was "Auto" to "9" and applied the changes.

When I looked at my iPad, it had connected right away. My wireless printer reset and everythinhg seems to work.

Good luck. Hope this helps.
