Display of emails (Gmail) in default iOS 7 app

Being new to apple this might be a trivial question. I managed to setup my gmail account on my iPad. Emails, contacts and calendar sync fine. But the slide-out left menu which contains an overview of all emails shows all items in bold. Even if I read them. Consequently it's impossible to distinguish between new unread and old read emails. Can this be configured? If so where and how?

I also noticed I don't get notified of new emails. The initial setup configured gmail to fetch manually. I changed it to fetch every x minutes. That should have done it right? Gmail apparently doesn't support push?!

Just setup gmail on my iPad Air (7.0.4)..

What I see is that unread emails have a large blue dot on the left side of the email Subject.

After reading an email the large blue dot is no longer displayed..

I don't know about Push.. I prefer Fetch Manually..
