OS X Yosemite mail stopped showing total inbox message count

Same issue here! The mail app no longer shows total message count in the title bar at the top for my inbox or any of the mail folders. The only way I can get it working again is to quit Mail and restart the Mail app and then it will show the mail count once again. After a while it disappears again however:( Any way to keep it there permanently?

This appears to be a bug. It is triggered when you view a smart folder - once you do, the count in the title bar will disappear until you restart mail.

I filed this as a bug with Apple, so they're aware of it. No ETA for a fix though.

I found this thread as I was trying to figure out why my iMac shows no count of total messages (not unread) while my MBPro continues to show the count in the title bar. Starting and restarting Mail on the iMac seems to have temporarily fixed the issue so thanks for that. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next go around...

I really don't know if this is related to viewing a smart folder because I have been viewing several smart folders today and my total mail count is still showing in the title bar. I have to try to pay more attention to when it suddenly disappears, but I know for sure it is not viewing the smart folders that is triggering it.

Same issue here. So frustrating! I use that count to manage productivity; now I have to quit and restart Mail every time I need to see how many messages are in my inbox. I don't use smart inboxes, so clicking on those is not what's triggering it.

It does not matter if you are viewing a smart mailbox.

It may be when you move mail out of the inbox into other folders. Which doesn't make it acceptable!

I solved this issue by taking the account offline, then back online.

I don't have the same success with that. I take it offline and back on and the number is still not there. I can quit the Mail app altogether and reopen it and it works.

For me, quitting and restarting Mail app had no effect but taking it offline and then back online did (at least for now).

I just upgraded to Yosemite and this (now in December) is happening to me.

Mine is holding steady now with total and unread messages showing. I forgot to note something that might be an important factor in what seems to be a permanent fix. Before disabling and reenabling my primary account, I ran the onyx utility from titanium software on my computer. Among other things, I chose to rebuild my mailboxes. I have used onyx to repair several critical issues recently. For example, I was having a major issue with spotlight indexing a couple months ago that was repaired by using onyx to rebuild the font caches.
