Carplay, Apple Maps and Waze

Just bought a Mercedes GLA with AppleCarplay.

I was so excited to at last plug my Iphone to run my favorite apps on my dashboard. My enthousiasm melt like a bucket of icecream trowed in a supernova when carplay forced me to use Apple Maps for navigation (and didn't let me look at my agenda but this is another story).

I took a deep breath and tought to myself "Surely, Apple Maps can't be as bad". But after two weeks of giving Apple Maps a chance : I'm sorry, it really really is far away from Waze or google maps. I had to get back to my stupid Iphone holder suck to my window (wich was the reason I moved to carplay and changed my car)

It is so important to me that I must say goodbye to 10+years with Iphone and switch to Android.

Dear Apple, I'm sure I'm not alone. Let me use Waze or at least Google Maps. Of fix Apple Maps but I don't think that could work.

Will you do something about this fast? (Like before Pixel 2 is out in two days and I fell I will be rushing to it)

Warm regards

(Since english is not my primary language please appologize for)

This is false. This is Apple fault. Apple don't allow 3rd party navigation apps on CarPlay.

Apple allow only Audio Apps, Messaging and VoIP Apps and Automaker Apps. N

I, too, am a disgruntled but loyal Apple fan, who has bought a car and had that massive deflating moment upon plugging in my iPhone.

Apple is preventing submission of third party navigation apps on CarPlay. Their Developer guidelines clearly state that third-party CarPlay submissions can only be used for audio apps, "automaker" apps, messaging apps, or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) apps. Waze does not fit into any of these categories because it is a navigation app.

If you want to help convince Apple to change this policy, please sign up for a free Apple Developer Account and file a bug report with Apple and explain why they need to allow navigation apps on CarPlay. They will take a few weeks to assess your bug report, and then file it as closed, but mark it as a duplicate of an existing bug report. To help Apple staff do this, mention rdar://22830071 in your submission. This is the mechanism that is roughly equivalent of "upvoting" a feature request. If enough developers do this, the original bug report will have so many requests they will be compelled not to ignore it.

Once Apple have opened CarPlay to navigation apps, Waze will definately enter the market, since they've already done so for Android Auto.

Please help spread the word by passing these instructions around, especially to software developers.

People, I have to tell you - I have Waze running actually ON CarPlay! 100% no Jailbreak needed. I drive a 2015 Skoda Octavia with the Amundsen Infotainment system, with CarPlay integration. To get it working, I bought a dashboard magnetic mount kit and fitted the magnet half on top of the touchscreen in my dash, and placed the metallic half on the back of my iPhone.

This is a stupid strategy, Apple, so come on and move ahead! Let us use Waze or Google Maps in Apple Carplay!

You are not addressing Apple here, this is a user to user support forum, and Apple does not participate here. So, if you wish to have Apple hear your plea, then you need to use their feedback page here, https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html, this is the only place they get user feedback/comments.

Apple reads all messages sent to feedback but they rarely (if ever) will reply.

Apple's market share in Brazil has not decreased 50% in two years. Here is some market share information from the last two years in Brazil:

  • January 2016 - 11.31%
  • June 2016 - 11.78%
  • January 2017 - 11.85%
  • June 2017 - 10.51%
  • December 2017 - 9.68%

Overall their market share has fallen less than 2% and their individual share decrease is 14.4% over the last two years. One thing I noticed was that the market share always tends to fall around August and September with the anticipation of a new iPhone being released. This year it went up in October and November but then fell again in December. This could have had to do with the limited stock of the iPhone X and my guess is that it will show an increase again in January 2018.

I have found an article finding the closest alternative to using waze on carplay.

http://www.carplaylife.com/how-to/how-to-enable-waze-navigation-on-apple-carplay /

Waze has not yet made software compatible for CarPlay. It is not Apple’s fault. Waze would have to spend months redesingning their software to fit with CarPlay.

This is the same with google maps.

You can file a complaint to Google (the owner of Waze & Google Maps) saying that you would like a compatible version and if enough people ‘complain’ they might just make a compatible version if they arent already.

I’m sorry that you have been let down but again, this isn't Apple’s fault.

What made you give this answer? I've been searching the web, on both apple and waze user and support forums. I have concluded that in fact is apple's fault. Waze would very much like to be allowed to deliver a apple carplay version of their navigation app but has not yet been admitted.

I have the exact same sentiment as Merlin1166

I bought a new car that has no navigation of it's own, it is depending on either carplay or android auto for that. I am a first generation iPhone user currently in the market for an Android phone just because of my frustration with apple maps (not finding any company's address and plainly not being able to find me the shortest route ever - in The Netherlands that is) and to a smaller extend with the limited amount of (third party) apps on carplay.

I think it will need waaaay more pressure for apple to allow 3rd party navigation. (User) data is the new currency and with so many people using google maps etc. they're missing out on that. Forcing people to use apple maps on car play is an easy way for them to collect such valuable data.

Btw what I did, since using an android in my everyday life is not an option: I got a second SIM card, bought an used android phone (in my case a galaxy S5) and now use this phone just for my car. All android music apps for android are really bad compared to iTunes on CarPlay but that's still acceptable when comparing the navigation maps

I too was so upset when I found out that the only way to use Waze on CarPlay was to jailbreak my phone. I am not going to waist my time with a jailbreak. I feel that Apple should allow a user to use any navigation app we want on CarPlay. I have used Apple Maps and on more that on occasion it has ran me into a dead-end or just got me lost.

I use Waze religiously and I and I could almost guarantee that if Apple advertised Waze on CarPlay, they would get a even more passionate following. I am been using Apple products since the beginning. I hate to say it, but I am heavily weighted on the side of switching to Android, just so I can use Waze in my car.

Good news for folks who own Ford vehicles with Sync 3.0. They just announced that waze will be available on it in coming weeks on their AppLink platform. This is huge news for those of us that have had the option of using Car Play (or android auto) or Fords own similar AppLink system. Up until now AppLink didn’t offer any navigation options but they just added Sygic and will be adding Waze soon as well.

This news applies in part to new Toyota’s as well. As they have also bought in, soley, to the backbone of Ford’s system, which they are calling Smart Device Link (SDL). While it may or may not yet be available on Toyota’s, the compatibility is there and I’d imagine it will be supported sooner than later.

While it’s hard to match CarPlay’s sleek and the matching design aesthetics with iOS, I’ve always felt that the trade off of not having to use Apple Maps makes it worth it.

Specifically, I

recently took a 6 hour trip. Going both to the location and returning, Apple maps consistently gave me different routes that were always 15-30 minutes slower. Sometimes it would be the exact same route with an added 20-30 minutes on ETA. It seems Apple maps just isn’t as good at knowing what traffic issues there are and how much a delay to calculate for those traffic issues. Oh and why can’t I pinch the screen to zoom in and out? My vehicle supports it. Google Maps does it on Android Auto on the same vehicle. C’mon Apple.

Apple, I get you and I get that you want to maintain control of what probably is the most important feature of CarPlay. Navigation that is. That said, for those of us not privileged enough to live in an Apple Maps optimized city/country, Waze is our only option - it is not just a preference. Apple Maps simply doesn’t work in Dubai, UAE. I am more than happy to use Apple Maps as my default navigation app however until you support Dubai maps, please enable Waze on CarPlay - it’s the right thing to do.

Regarding the issue of whether people are addressing Apple or not - this is a forum for discussing technical issues with Apple products, so whilst it serves well as evidence of the volume of customers who are unhappy with the situation (which I do think is worthwhile), it isn't likely to make much of a change by itself. There are a number of other suggestions in this thread for more formally suggesting improvements to Apple, so please look for those and make your opinion known via those channels too: Apple product feedback, Apple Developer Bugreporting, writing directly to Tim. Anyone have any better suggestions?
