You can always put it in full screen mode, leave it open in Mission Control out of the way until you need it, just a swipe away...

For me, I use a flat-bed scanner and thus have occasions to need to frame what I scan. Those who use feed scanners can live with the small window. Please submit a feedback

This has bugged me for years.

Here is the solution that I just figured out on macOS Sonoma 14.3.1. I'm not sure but it might work on earlier versions too.

1. Open Image Capture
2. Select "Move Window to Left Side of Screen"
3. Quit Image Capture.
4. Reopen Image Capture.

It will not open full height on the left side.

This is really strange. I'm on 14.4.1 so I was very hopeful your trick would work for me.

It did not.

I'm thinking that for some people, there is something screwed up with a system setting that keeps this particular app (it is the only one of many on my Mac Mini that shows this issue) from opening with the last window size.

Give the demo version of VueScan a try. I like it better that the software that comes with my scanners.

...and, this immediately stopped working after a brief period of time.
