I have a new-in-box iMac that I bought a few years ago (don't ask). I was trying to figure out how to sell it but PowerOn and Apple don't seem to recognize the model number and Apple doesn't recognize the serial number. It is an Apple iMac 21.5", 3.6GHz 4-Core i3, 8GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Pro 555X, Mid 2020; model number Z147000RR. How is this possible? I can't be the only person who bought one of these.

As you've already been asked from whom did you purchase it?
Are you located in the US? If not then where?
When you first turned on the iMac did you get the "Hello" screen?
If not then it was not a new machine.

Adorama is not Apple. Again, there was no Mid-2020 iMac.
I found two sites in the Ukraine advertising a Mid-2020 21.5" iMac.
FWIW, there was no early, mid or late designation for iMacs after 2015.

In any event, neither Apple nor PowerOn recognize this model - whether you use Z147000RR or A2116.
I don’t know what to make of it.

And you say you bought this online directly from Apple? Do you have a copy of the order that you could examine and maybe post (but remove any personally identifying info & serial numbers)? The image you posted appears to be a sticker.
The Z147000RR model number doesn't correspond to the format of any Apple model number I've ever seen. They are always of the form "MXWT2LL/A" or similar.
I wonder if the Logic Board was maybe replaced in 2020 & flashed with the wrong info?
Online in the US. I tried looking up A2116 also and got nowhere with Apple or PowerOn

While the “Z” doesn’t align with anything, the A2116 and the noted specs show as:
FWIW, there was no Mid-2020 iMac, 21.5" or otherwise and the model number is not valid. Where did you purchase it?
Just to add, the last 21.5" iMac, was from 2019 which was available with a 4-Core i3 and a AMD Radeon Pro 555X GPU. The Model Identifier is iMac19,2, Model Number A2116.
