Unable to sync 4th generation iPod with iTunes suddenly.

Have rebooted the iPod and restarted iTunes to no avail. It is saying it cannot read the iPod and to restore it. I really don't want to do that considering how much material is on it and that I am currently on travels! No new software has been added to either device and the iPod is not out of memory. Any recommendations? I use Mac OS Mohave.
