One should always eject before shutting down on MacBook Air after an External drive back up. How does one do that before removing the external HD. Why am I getting messages here to include text? I thought that’s what I’m doing?

There are two ways to elect an external drive, Time Machine or other:
1 - click and drag the drive to the Trash Bin which will eject the drive.
2 - Control (right) - click on the drive and select eject from the contextual menu:
