hearing music from iPhone and getting AppleWatch workout notifications

Hi - I am using airpods, iPhone and apple watch Ultra.

I want to workout using the watch's workout program and listen to music from my iPhone. Both are connected to my airpods. I am able to hear the music but cannot hear the workout notifications such as the pace that the watch vocalizes every mile.

How can I get both to play on my airpods?
