My new Apple Pencil Pro just arrived from UPS and I was wondering why it will not connect with my 12,9" Ipad Pro (2022).
It only works with an M4 ipad Pro or the new iPad Air which has the same M2 Chip then my iPad. We are talking about a simple Stylus. The M2 chip will carry me for years...I'm not willing to upgrade to have a similar experience as the Surface pens.
I had to personalize my pencil because my Son has the 2nd Generation Pencil and they are indistinguishable. What prevents me from returning the item. Jeez I'm so angry right now.
Apple why? This is pure Marketing nonsense and not "It just works".
In most countries/regions, if purchased directly from Apple, you can unconditionally return an undamaged/unwanted item within 14-days of its original purchase from Apple.
Here is Apple’s definitive compatibility list for Apple Pencil and iPad:
Apple Pencil compatibility - Apple Support
Different models of Apple Pencil use entirely different pairing and charging interfaces.
The second generation Pencil and Apple Pencil Pro can only be used with iPad models that have a magnetic/inductive dock that is exclusively designed for the Pencil. Automatic charging and pairing of these Pencils is controlled by the iPad's magnetic dock.
While the second generation Pencil and Pencil Pro both use inductive charging/pairing, the inductive-coupling components that charge the Pencil are positioned differently - this being necessary to accommodate camera hardware used in 2024 models of iPad Pro and iPad Air.
The first generation Apple Pencil uses the physical Lightning port of the Pencil and host iPad for both pairing and charging the first generation Pencil. The first generation Pencil can also be charged using an inline charging adapter and the iPad’s Power Adapter. This pencil can only be used with compatible iPad models that have a Lightning connector; with the sole exception of the iPad10, requiring a special adapter, iPad models that feature a USB-C port lack any means by which to pair with a first generation Pencil.
The USB-C Pencil is compatible with all models of iPad that also feature a USB-C port.
In summary, the Apple Pencil models are not interchangeable - and can only be used with the iPad that has appropriate internal hardware.
