I've sold a Numbers sheet (without password) but think I will set one up.
If I enter a Hint in the pass set up on the sheet will the buyer then see the hint if they fail to gain access after 3 attempts?

I would assume so, yes. The spreadsheet doesn't know who is trying to open it so I assume it will present the hint to whoever enters the password incorrectly three times.
Make a text document (Word, Pages, TextEdit, or whatever) for yourself and write the password(s) there for your records. No need for a hint if you do that.
I am assuming that the person who buys my file also gets access to the hint?
