New to Mac and established password to unlock home screen was not recognized. I have tried restarting and have gone to “options” and “terminal”. Any choice I select from there prompts me for a recovery key, which I never set up. Stuck and not sure where to go from here. Would like to save what I have so far. Thanks for any help!

a new or used Mac that has been properly prepared by the seller will ONLY power up into Setup Assistant.
if yours did not do that initially, or requires a Recovery key, you or the previous owner has locked it.
Return it to the seller and have them remove the lock, unless YOU deliberately locked it with Find My Mac.
