Connecting MacBook to old monitor

No image of any sort appears on the Acer monitor

I also tried connecting an old NEC monitor and the same thing happens.

Try a monitor that is not old and compare your results...

It is possible your 'found' converter was intended to convert older Analog VGA to Digital HDMI, and not the reverse.

[in my opinion] you are unlikely to be able to successfully convert HDMI to anything except single-link DVI, which is a simple re-wire, no conversion.
