My air pod 3's cut out sporadically during a phone conversation. I just got them for Christmas. Are they broken already?

Most annoyingly during calls, the air pods stop receiving or transmitting. I can reactivate them by selecting air pods on the speaker button. How do I fix this? I use them while making and receiving all calls.

They are about 6 months old and charged frequently. Loss of power does not seem to be an issue. They just turn off randomly.
