Problems with screen splitting after upgrade

I've been using my ipad as a second screen for work for a long time and everything has been great, but recently started having problems. When I just split the screen everything works fine, but when I run any window full screen on one of the screens, the other screen immediately goes dark and can no longer be interacted with. I've looked at the screen settings and AirDrop and Handoff, but nothing helps....
